iPhone 17 Pro: There have been a lot of rumours going around the expected launch of Apple's iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which the Cupertino-based tech giant could drop later this year. Leaks and rumours suggest that this time we might get to see an upgrade in the 48-megapixel telephoto camera and some details regarding the same have surfaced online. Previously reports had indicated that the iPhone 17 Pro models would be the first ones to bring a high-resolution telephoto camera, according to a tipster Apple could also introduce a lens that adds extra enhancements over previous years' iPhone 16 Pro model cameras.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max may feature a significant telephoto camera upgrade, according to a post by tipster Majin Bu. The leak suggests that these models will come equipped with a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, offering a 35mm equivalent of an 85mm lens—a shift from the 12-megapixel telephoto camera with a 120mm lens found in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

This change is expected to enhance portrait photography on the iPhone 17 Pro models, delivering sharper and more detailed images. However, it also means a reduction in optical zoom capability, with the upcoming phones reportedly offering 3.5x optical zoom, down from the 5x optical zoom on the current flagship models.

That said, Apple is likely compensating for this with improved digital zoom capabilities. The 48-megapixel sensor is expected to enable up to 7x "lossless" digital zoom, thanks to in-sensor crop zoom—the same technology used in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.

This seems like a nice upgrade but crispy portrait pictures wouldn't be the only benefit, it would also be able to click better low-light shots as more light can be captured by the lens.

With the 48-megapixel telephoto camera on the iPhone 17 Pro, photographers should be able to crop images with minimal loss of detail—an improvement over the 12-megapixel telephoto camera on the iPhone 16 Pro models.

However we must tread carefully with this information as nothing official is yet confirmed and things are still under wraps, and we all know how Apple like to keep things behind the curtain till the final moment, and we most likely might not see any confirmation on camera upgrade either for the iPhone 17 series devices that we might see later this year. Based on Apple's conventional launch pattern we can expect the lineup to drop sometime in September.
