The iPhone 16 series marked Apple’s first real step into the AI world with Apple Intelligence, showing steady—if not dramatic—progress. Now, all eyes are on the iPhone 17 series, especially the Pro Max model. With months still to go before the official launch, leaks and rumors are already giving us a fair idea of what to expect. Here are five major upgrades we’re hoping to see in the iPhone 17 Pro Max compared to the 16 Pro Max.

A New Look: Design Refresh on the Cards

Apple didn’t stray far from the familiar last year. The iPhone 16 Pro Max looked almost identical to the 15 Pro Max, with the most noticeable change being the new Desert Titanium color. That could change in 2025. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to get a redesigned back with a horizontal camera module made of aluminum. This could give the rear panel a two-tone look, and some reports even suggest that Apple might abandon the titanium frame altogether.

Big Improvements in Camera: Selfies and Zoom

The iPhone 16 Pro Max delivered solid upgrades with a 48MP main and ultrawide camera. But the selfie shooter remained largely unchanged. This year, Apple is expected to raise the bar with a 24MP front camera for sharper selfies. On the back, a new 48MP telephoto lens with enhanced optical zoom could also make its debut, giving users more flexibility and clarity when shooting at a distance.

iOS 19 and Exclusive Apple Intelligence Features

One of the biggest draws for the iPhone 17 Pro Max could be the software. Apple is expected to launch iOS 19 alongside the new series, with expanded Apple Intelligence features likely to be exclusive to the iPhone 17 lineup. We’ll get a better look at the software during WWDC 2025, but early whispers suggest tighter integration of AI throughout the system—something that may not trickle down to older devices.

More Power Under the Hood: A19 Pro Chip Incoming

Performance upgrades are a given with every new iPhone, but 2025 could bring a significant leap. The iPhone 16 Pro Max launched with the A18 Pro chip built on a 3nm process, paired with 8GB RAM to handle Apple Intelligence tasks. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to feature the new A19 Pro chip, which may be built using TSMC’s 2nm process. That means even better efficiency, speed, and AI capability—especially as Apple pushes further into intelligent features.

Battery Life That Actually Improves

Battery life has always been an area where Apple tends to play it safe. The iPhone 16 Pro Max offers up to 18 hours of use with a 4685mAh battery. While we’re not expecting a massive battery size increase, the efficiency gains from the A19 Pro chip and possible improvements to power management could extend daily usage. Faster charging could also finally make an appearance after years of using the same charging speeds.
