The smartphone sector in India has witnessed rapid changes in recent years. One of the major ones in the production process is the local manufacturing and assembling of mobile phones. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, shared some stats that reflect the change in the mobile industry in the past nine years around this development.

According to Vaishnaw's post on X, formerly Twitter, the industry has witnessed a 20 times growth in the last nine years. He added that in 2014, the sector was 78 per cent dependent on imports. But in 2023, more than 99 per cent of the mobiles sold in India are made in India.

In his post, the minister said: "Met Mobile industry to review progress. Industry has grown 20 times in 9 years. 2014: 78 per cent import dependent. 2023: 99.2 per cent of all mobiles sold in India are 'Made In India'". He even posted a few statistics about the production of smartphones in India after meeting the key stakeholders from the industry.

According to the information shared by the minister, the current mobile phone production in India stands at Rs 3,50,000 crores. The figures for 2014-15 are 18,900 crores. The change can be partly attributed to the rising shift towards local manufacturing and assembling of smartphones by leading Chinese smartphone brands. Some of them are Vivo, OPPO, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Realme and more.

Moreover, select models of the latest iPhones are assembled in India. These models were available for buyers on the same day as the launch. Search leader Google is also considering local manufacturing of its premium Pixel phones in India. Beyond these tech giants, Samsung also manufactures its flagship smartphones in the country.
