As of Friday, Zhao Shengjia, co-creator of ChatGPT, is now Superintelligence Lab’s Chief Scientist, following the announcement made by Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This is indicative of how China-based Meta Platforms is increasingly focused on developing sophisticated AI, especially in the face of competition with OpenAI and Google DeepMind.

Zhao is expected to work with Meta’s CEO and Chief AI Officer, Wang Alexandr, on the scientific work and research schedule of the lab. Zhao will spearhead the research agenda and scientific direction of the lab.

Shengjia Zhao’s Role and AI Legacy

Zhao is recognised for his major contributions as a research scientist at OpenAI for:

  • ChatGPT
  • GPT-4
  • Mini models such as 4.1 and o3

Shengjia Zhao is a co-founder of Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, which aims to coordinate the company’s efforts on the Llama models with the long-range goals of Artificial General Intelligence.

Meta’s AI Talent Race

Zhao’s transition to Meta coincides with the ongoing OpenAI – Meta talent feud as AI researchers continue to shift into Meta in recent weeks.

  • His shift to Meta coincides with a period where the company has been issuing rundowns of the highest pay and merging with startups to acquire seasoned AI professionals.
  • The latest addition to Meta’s workforce comes after the company’s Llama 4 model was received poorly, which in turn, motivated the company to further its AI initiatives. 

Superintelligence Lab vs FAIR

Other than the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Lab, which is headed by the company founder, the rest of the divisions, which include Facebook AI Research (FAIR), headed by deep learning pioneer Yann LeCun, operate under him.

While FAIR is tasked with its primary AI research objectives, the Superintelligence Lab has the goal of making advancements to the AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) systems, as well as expanding the limits of open-source AI.

Zuckerberg’s Vision for AGI

According to Meta, the quote that has stood out the most is that the aim is to create a “full general intelligence” and have the product available for the public to freely use.

This has earned Meta’s praise for proactive measures and concern for the power that can come from such freedom.
