JE Technology Desk: Days after Elon Musk restricted the visibility of tweets for users without a Twitter account, it seems the company has taken a U-turn to reverse the move. The microblogging platform is allowing users without an account to view tweets again. We tried it for ourselves and can confirm this is working. However, users cannot access all tweets from an account like earlier.
While we could not access the main feed, the profile bio of the Twitter account was visible. However, this might not be the case for all users. In our case, the Twitter post from the direct link of the tweet was viewable. However, an error message: "Something went wrong. Try reloading." appeared on the profile when we tried viewing other tweets. According to some reports, a sign-in pop up may also be displayed.
Elon Musk or Twitter has not confirmed the change yet. When the Tesla CEO account walled these accounts, he tweeted: "Temporary emergency measure. We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users." The cited reason was Twitter's data usage by AI companies to train their models for free.
Besides the mandatory sign-in requirement, the company also introduced reading limits on its platform. The latest restriction for the verified accounts is 10,000 posts, unverified accounts are 1,000, and new unverified accounts are 500 posts. Announcing the move, Musk tweeted, "To address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation, we've applied the following temporary limits." Before the announcement, Twitter witnessed a global outage that plagued the platform for hours before getting fixed.
After all the buzz, Meta announced Threads, a Twitter rival on Thursday. The Mark Zuckerberg-led app has been an attention seeker for a while now. A can post can include 500 text characters, videos of up to five minutes, links and images. Smartphone users in India can download the app from the Google Play Store on Android and Apple App Store on iPhones. The app is live in India and over 100 countries. You can read more on this here.
