Mobile World Congress 2024: Top smartphone tech companies are busy showcasing their products at the Mobile World Congress 2024. In the league for Android and iOS-running smartphones, Deutsche Telekom showcased their futuristic concept handset that will depend on the evolving artificial intelligence technology to accomplish tasks otherwise possible via .apk packages.
Smartphones in the current scenario require an app to accomplish user-defined tasks such as messaging contacts, scrolling social media, browsing the internet, playing games, watching movies and more. According to Reuters, the German company presented the possibilities on its 'T-Phone' device. The app-free UI was developed in partnership with Qualcomm and Brain.ai.
"I can tell you that in 5-10 years from now, nobody from us will use apps anymore," the report cites Deutsche Telekom's CEO Tim Hoettges as saying in a presentation at the tech conference. Some of the tasks which the phone can accomplish without apps are generating recommendations for travel plans, booking flight tickets, sending photos/videos to people, helping users shop online and more.
Here is a video demonstrating its capabilities:
"The showcased product reflects Deutsche Telekom's belief that multi- and crossmodal Large Language Models (LLMs) will soon become integral to devices, enhancing and simplifying the lives of its customers...Like a concierge, the assistant understands your goals and takes care of the details," Deutsche Telekom said.
While the makers promise an app-free future, the device on which it was presented still offers a dated design on the front. The prototype phone has a V-shaped notch and an asymmetrical chin at the bottom. Though the maker has not confirmed the international pricing, the compromise score will depend on this. Plus, note that the design may change before launch as it is a prototype model.
Meanwhile, a range of smartphone and laptop makers have unveiled their innovative devices at the event. Some of them include the Xiaomi 14 series flagships, Samsung's Galaxy Ring and Lenovo's transparent laptop screen. You can read about the unique laptop prototype here.
