Social media influencers and content creators have witnessed rapid growth in recent times. One of the reasons for this hit league is the internet revolution aided by cheap data rates and the rise of short video platforms. In the latest move to honour the work of select content creators, the Indian government is set to announce national creators' awards to recognise "new-age influencers and creators", as per the official sources quoted by news agency PTI.

According to the sources, this first-of-its-kind award will cater to the 'Gen Z' audience who have deep interests in social media and the internet. These awards will be distributed in about 20 categories. Social media influencers from platforms such as video streaming giant YouTube and photo-sharing app Instagram will be in the race as contenders for these awards.

One of the categories in which awards will be presented will include those who have helped in spreading the soft power and culture of India in the international landscape, the report noted. Other award categories may comprise 'swachhta ambassadors', 'green champions', 'agro creators', 'tech creators' and more. These awards shall be similar to the National Film Awards that honour the works in the film sector across languages and categories.

Apart from the government, social media apps also recognise the work of their creators via several means. YouTube Creator Awards and Instagram Achievement Awards are a few examples. Apart from these, both popular platforms offer monetisation tools for eligible creators. X (formerly Twitter) also has an ad revenue-sharing program to honour the work of the creators and let them earn money by engaging on the platform. Users must be subscribed to an X Premium plan to be eligible to avail of the benefits.
