Soon after claims that OpenAI is preparing a search engine behind locked doors surfaced online, a fresh report claimed the company could announce the product on Monday. If the claims of the Reuters report materialise, this could mean the announcement date of the new model could be May 13, which is one day ahead of Google I/O 2024.
According to the sources cited in the report, this could raise competition for Google, which leads the search engine market. While the date is subject to change, this claim comes after the recent updates from Bloomberg concerning the AI-based search product that could take on offerings from Google and AI startup Perplexity.

The rumoured date of launch is important as Google will likely announce a host of AI hardware and software products on May 14. The anticipated product could be an extension of the viral chatbot and may source results from the web with citations, as per Bloomberg.
For context, ChatGPT is the AI research and deployment firm's flagship model that can deliver conversational responses to textual prompts. While it may not deliver as accurate and real-time responses as a traditional search product, it has been touted as a possible medium to gather information online. Previously, OpenAI has offered integration into Bing for paying subscribers.
ChatGPT was the fastest app to clock over 100 million active users (monthly) after its launch in 2022. As per Bloomberg, the search feature could be integrated into ChatGPT, which may cite web sources (like Wikipedia and blog posts) while returning results. Another version of the option may integrate images into responses to a question.
The Information reported about the product in February. However, the intricate details of how it may work were missing. Several users have speculated the existence of the search development via the web domain search.chatgpt.com.
