OpenAI launches the Codex app for macOS. The new desktop application has been created to assist developers in controlling multiple AI coding agents, all within an individual workspace. As a macOS-native app, the tool enables developers to operate parallel coding tasks, organise work based on project threads and establish direct communication with code repositories. The release builds on OpenAI’s Codex platform, which now also drives services such as GitHub Copilot and Codex CLI, in heading towards making developers’ interactions with AI simpler as part of their coding work.

What Is the Codex App for macOS

The Codex app serves as a centralised agent for coding tasks. Unlike the conventional AI coding tools that process one task at a time, this new app allows several agents to work in a single user interface simultaneously. Every. An agent can be dedicated to a different type of work (feature development, debugging or test generation), and this way teams can minimise context switches & manual coordination between the team members.

Codex itself is a cloud-based software engineering agent introduced in April 2025. It uses large language models fine-tuned for programming to:

- Translate natural language into code

- Fix bugs and generate tests

- Propose pull requests

- Assist with repository exploration

It supports multiple programming languages, including Python, JavaScript and Go.

Key Features of the Codex App

Thread-based workflows: Each agent runs in its own project thread

Parallel task execution: Multiple agents can work at the same time

Diff review and iteration: Developers can inspect, comment on and refine changes directly

Skills support: Reusable workflows combining instructions, scripts and resources

These features help keep tasks separate and reduce conflicts when working on the same codebase.

Availability and System Support

The Codex app supports macOS (Apple Silicon) now. Users can log in with a ChatGPT account or an OpenAI API key. OpenAI also said it would bring the app to Windows and Linux in the months ahead.
