Pixel 9 Pro Fold News: Google announced its Pixel Fold in 2023, and the company was expected to introduce its successor at Google I/O 2024. However, a new report from Android Authority claims the company may bring four new smartphones in the Pixel 9 series this year. For context, the company has launched two new flagships every year since 2016.
If this turns out correct, Google might skip upgrading the foldable at I/O 2024 on May 14. According to the report, the company could bring the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which have codenames - 'tokay', 'caiman', 'komodo' and 'comet'. It noted that the naming scheme for the foldable may not be final yet.
For context, the company introduced the Pixel Fold in May 2023 at Google I/O for $1,799. The launch was a surprise as the company releases non-flagship products at the event, which includes the 'A' series. Pixel Fold gets a Tensor G2 and lesser Android upgradability, which makes it a less attractive choice for buyers at its massive price tag.

Plus, Google's flagship bar phones (Pixel 8 series) debuted with a range of exclusive AI features out of the box. The company could plan to patch the foldable with the Pixel 9 to curb these challenges and bring a more polished UI experience. The report also noted that the next Pixel Fold may use the Tensor G4 and ship with an upgraded design.
If the strategy materialises, Google could follow a different path than the competition (such as Samsung and Motorola), who launch their foldable phones at a different timeframe than non-folding flagships. Meanwhile, Google may also bring an upgraded modem for satellite connectivity with the Tensor G4 chip. The Samsung Modem 5400 could be faster and more power efficient than its predecessor.
