Vodafone Idea (Vi) will soon implement Smart Link Protection, an innovative new safety feature designed to shield its users from fraudulent and suspicious links. According to TelecomTalk's report, this system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse and block potentially malicious links in real time - helping prevent phishing scams and online fraudsters.

Unlike traditional security measures, Smart Link Protection will function at the network level. This means it won’t require any manual setup from the user—allowing Vi subscribers to continue using their smartphones as usual while staying protected.

How Smart Link Protection Works

Once activated, this feature will quickly identify and block harmful links before they ever reach user devices. Instead of simply flagging them as spam after receipt, Vi's network serves as an early defense by quickly blocking malicious links in real time - potentially decreasing phishing attempts by cybercriminals who try to trick users into providing sensitive data by disguising messages as genuine.

Building on AI-Powered Spam Detection

The upcoming feature builds on Vi’s AI and machine learning (ML)-powered spam SMS identification system launched in 2024. That system already scans messages in real time to detect:

- Fraudulent URLs

- Unsolicited promotions

- Identity theft attempts

By combining real-time AI monitoring with pre-trained spam detection algorithms, Vi aims to create a stronger safety net against cyber threats.

Other Anti-Spam Measures by Vi

In addition to AI solutions, Vi has also implemented several anti-spam initiatives, including:

- Spam complaint filing through the Vi app

- Detection of unsolicited commercial communication (UCC)

- Identification of suspicious bulk call patterns

Industry Competition in Spam Protection

Vi isn’t the only telecom operator focusing on network-level security. Last year, Airtel launched a similar solution to detect spam calls and messages. With Smart Link Protection, Vi is aiming to match and possibly outpace its competitors in providing secure digital experiences for subscribers.

Rollout Timeline

According to reports, Smart Link Protection will be introduced in the coming days, with a phased rollout expected across Vi’s user base. Once live, it will strengthen the operator’s security ecosystem and provide customers with greater peace of mind against online scams.
