WhatsApp, Meta's instant messaging application, has announced a new feature to help you gain more context when a WhatsApp account adds you to a group. The new context card will display the name of the person who added you to the group, when it was created and the account name of the person who created that particular space.
Based on the information from this card, a user can decide whether they wish to remain a participant in the group, leave the space or review the available safety tools. According to WhatsApp, the new enhancement can offer more information and help in instances when you might have met a user (or a group of WhatsApp users) and did not add their phone numbers to the contacts list.
The feature will be similar to the existing experience available with people in one-to-one chats that offers additional context if someone who is not in your phonebook messages you on the platform. It will also display the information that you were "added by a non-contact". The feature has started rolling out for users and is expected to reach all accounts in the coming weeks, according to the Meta platform.

The idea behind the feature is to protect accounts from spam, fraudulent activity or scam groups that they may not wish to be a part of. It will also help users better avoid unnecessary groups via the essential information right at the outset. Meanwhile, the company allows everyone to add you to a WhatsApp group by default.
"This way, you can easily connect with friends and family, even if they’re not in your contacts list," according to Whatsapp's Help Center. Users can manage these settings from the Groups option within the Privacy tab in Settings. You can choose from three options: 'Everyone', 'My contacts' and 'My contacts except...'. If you will continue to use the 'Everyone' option, the context card will be a helpful addition.
