Progress often comes at the cost of tradeoffs, and when Google combined Google Podcasts into YouTube Music, users lost several useful features as a result. Most notable among these was the inability to automatically trim long silences in podcasts - something introduced back in 2018 by Google Podcasts.
Now, after more than a year of waiting, Google has finally implemented their long-awaited "Trim Silence" toggle within YouTube Music. 2018 saw Google Podcasts introduce silence trimming as part of their feature rollout timeline.

Feature Rollout Timeline
- 2018: Google Podcasts introduced silence trimming.
- 2023–2024: Feature missing from YouTube Music after Podcasts shut down.
- March 2024: APK teardown revealed early work on the option.
- Summer 2025: Feature spotted live by users and now available broadly.
Where to Find It
YouTube Music's Trim Silence feature can automatically skip over any lengthy gaps or pauses in podcast playback to produce tighter episodes that engage listeners more fully.
Why It Matters
Silence trimming can be a substantial quality-of-life feature for many listeners. Podcast producers ideally edit out long pauses before publishing episodes; real-world episodes often still contain them. With this update, YouTube Music finally meets Google Podcasts' usability in this key aspect.
The Bottom Line
Has YouTube Music caught up to Google Podcasts before shutting it down? Definitely. Now that the feature has finally arrived, podcast fans can look forward to an uninterrupted listening experience without dead air gaps.
YouTube Music now supports Google Podcasts' "Trim Silence" feature for podcasts. This enables YouTube Music to automatically skip long pauses, improving listening experience while meeting Google Podcasts' usability expectations.
