As the ‘Gruha Jyothi’ scheme for 200 units of free electricity became effective on Friday, power distribution companies in Telangana began giving ‘zero bills’ to qualified households. Thousands of households in Telangana received ‘zero bills’ for electricity on Friday as part of the welfare scheme, which was promised to be implemented by the Congress party in the last Assembly polls.
The beneficiaries of the scheme are those who hold white ration cards (BPL families), have linked them with Aadhaar cards and have applied for the scheme during Praja Palana. The power distribution companies (Discoms) have modified their billing software to issue ‘zero bills’ to those who consume less than 200 units per month.
A customer, who consumed 114 units with a total bill amount of Rs 489, received a ‘zero bill’ on Friday. The process started in Hyderabad and it will be extended to the entire state in the next few days. To cover the subsidy cost, Discoms will send details of the subsidy to the state government by the 20th of each month, reported news agency IANS.
