Complete list of RBI Governors of India: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), also known as the Central Bank of India, handles India's monetary policies. It was established on April 1, 1935, under the RBI Act of 1934 and was founded on the suggestions of the ‘Hilton-Young Commission.’ RBI was initially established as a private bank and was nationalized on January 1, 1949, after India's independence. On December 12, 2024, Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990-batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre became the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
When the RBI was established, its headquarters were in Kolkata but they were relocated to Mumbai in 1937. The RBI is led by a Governor selected by the Government of India and there have been 25 Governors till today since its foundation.
Importance Of RBI Governor
The Governor is the CEO of the Reserve Bank of India and the Chairman of its Central Board of Directors and his signature on Indian currency notes symbolises their authority. Governors are appointed for three-year terms, with the option of reappointment.
