In a historic decision that brings Elon Musk's space-age vision nearer to reality, Boca Chica Village residents in Cameron County, Texas, voted to annex their community as a new city, Starbase, Texas. 173 out of the 177 ballots cast supported the action, formally creating a new city based on SpaceX's massive launch complex. This small South Texas beach town, previously characterized by remoteness and beauty, is currently being read about around the globe as the headquarters for SpaceX's ambitious Starship program, aimed at sending people to Mars.

What Is Starbase, Texas?

Starbase covers about 1.6 square miles and features SpaceX's advanced rocket development and launch facilities. The space has been slowly redeveloping since 2014, after Musk initially proposed the name "Starbase" in 2021. The city is now home to thousands of SpaceX workers, a futuristic residential area. A private K-12 school called Ad Astra, with the motto "to the stars" in Latin, is under construction.

The population, which resides on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, is currently managed by a local government that consists of a mayor and two commissioners. This group will handle planning, taxation, and other important civic responsibilities, representing a huge change from county management to corporation-driven government.

Of the 283 registered voters in the region, most are SpaceX workers or associates, county records show. Approximately 95 per cent of the area's registered voters have enrolled since 2021. Just 10 of 247 residential lots in Starbase are not owned by SpaceX or its employees.

What's Next for Starbase?

Starbase will remain the hub of SpaceX's Mars program. With a one-million-square-foot factory, frequent Starship test flights, and a thriving population of employees, the city is expected to grow quickly. Moving trucks, Airstream trailers, Teslas, and construction workers now define the formerly sleepy village. Whether Starbase is a blueprint for the future or a warning of corporate cities is yet to be determined, but one thing is clear that it has already changed the local demography.
