US actor Carl Weathers, renowned for his portrayal of boxer Apollo Creed in the 'Rocky' franchise, engaging in iconic and intense boxing scenes with Sylvester Stallone, has died at the age of 76, as confirmed by his family. With a career spanning five decades, Weathers made over 75 appearances in movies and TV, initially gaining recognition in the Blaxploitation films of the mid-1970s. Known for his role in the 1987 film 'Predator' alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, he had more recently earned an Emmy nomination for his part in the 'Star Wars' spin-off series 'The Mandalorian,' making an impact on both the big and small screens.
Announcing the sad news, his family said, "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers." Adding, "Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations." While the cause of death was not disclosed in the statement, the statement said Carl Weathers passed away peacefully in his sleep.
In recent times, younger audiences admired his role in the Disney+ hit 'The Mandalorian,' where he portrayed Greef Karga, the head of the Bounty Hunters' Guild, forming a close bond with lead Pedro Pascal across nine episodes. Weathers also contributed his voice to the beloved franchise by playing Combat Carl in 2019's 'Toy Story 4.'
His performance as a golf coach in 'Happy Gilmore,' guiding Adam Sandler's character after leaving the pro tour due to losing his hand to an alligator, earned him praise.
