Here’s everything you need to know about the deadly disease, from symptoms, causes and treatments.

What Is Cancer?

Cancer refers to any one of the large number of diseases that are characterised by the development of abnormal cells that spread uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissues. Cancer happens when normal cells become cancerous cells that multiply and spread. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US. Although there are 100 types of cancer, the most common categories are solid, blood and mixed cancer.

Symptoms Of Cancer

The symptoms of cancer vary depending on what part of the body is affected. Some common symptoms include:

Fatigue

Lump or area of thickening that can be felt under the skin

Weight changes, including unintended loss or gain

Skin changes, such as yellowing, darkening or redness of the skin, sores that won't heal, or changes to existing moles

Changes in bowel or bladder habits

Persistent cough or trouble breathing

Difficulty swallowing

Hoarseness

Persistent indigestion or discomfort after eating

Persistent, unexplained muscle or joint pain

Persistent, unexplained fevers or night sweats

Unexplained bleeding or bruising

Causes Of Cancer

Cancer is a genetic disorder, however, it does not mean that it is inherited. It happens when genes that manage cell activity mutate. They create abnormal cells that divide and multiply, eventually disrupting the normal functioning of the body. These cells create cancer clusters or tumours. Cancerous cells may break away from tumours and travel to other areas of the body through your lymphatic system or bloodstream.

Treatment Of Cancer

Surgery: Healthcare professionals can remove cancerous tumours that haven’t spread.

Chemotherapy: Destroys cancer cells with powerful drugs in pill form or intravenously (through a needle into a vein).

Radiation Therapy: Kills cancer cells with high dosages of radiation.

Immunotherapy: Engages the immune system to fight the disease.

Targeted therapy: Targets the genetic mutations (changes) that turn healthy cells into cancer cells.

Hormone Therapy: Blocks cancer-causing hormones. For example, people who have prostate cancer might receive hormones to lower testosterone, which can contribute to prostate cancer.

Bone Marrow Transplant: This replaces damaged blood stem cells with healthy ones.

It is important to consult the doctor immediately after the symptoms are noticed.
