Michigan Walmart Attack: In a shocking incident of violence, at least 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday afternoon (local time), with six victims reported to be in critical condition, according to local authorities. The Michigan State Police confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody, and the situation is now under control. "Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office is investigating a multiple stabbing incident at the Wal-Mart in Traverse City. The suspect is in custody, details are limited at this time," Michigan State Police's sixth district said in a post on X.
Traverse City, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, is a world-renowned tourist destination famous for its cherry festival, wineries, and lighthouses. The region is approximately 25 miles to the east of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Munson Healthcare said via social media that 11 people were being treated at the region's largest hospital in northern Michigan. Spokesperson Megan Brown said all were stabbing victims. Six were critical and five were in serious condition late Saturday, she said. The hospital was still evaluating the extent of their injuries, but did not provide specific details, she added.
The stabbing took place shortly after 6 PM local time. Michigan State Police and local 911 units responded promptly. "Emergency responders are on the scene. There is no active threat," reported Grand Traverse 911, asking people to keep their distance from the Walmart property and surrounding businesses until an investigation can be conducted.

The suspect is reported to have used what appears to be a folding-type knife during the attack, said Sheriff Shea. The suspect, who is believed to be a resident of Michigan, has not been identified, and a motive for the attack is yet unknown. Resident Tiffany DeFell, 36, who happened to be in the parking lot at the time of the attack, recounted the harrowing moment, "It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out. This is something you see in the movies. It's not what you expect to see where you're living."
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences and concern, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.” Walmart also issued a statement, calling the incident “unacceptable” and thanking the first responders for their swift action. “Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the quick response by emergency personnel.” FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also affirmed through social media that the FBI is cooperating with local law enforcement and will offer aid as needed. No additional injuries have been reported so far and the investigations are under progress. The authorities will issue further information in the next few hours.
