A Boeing 737 MAX operated by United Airlines rolled onto the grass and off the runway at George Bush Airport in Houston early on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said. The 160 passengers and six members of the crew were unharmed. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA will investigate the matter. According to the FAA and United, the passengers got off the aircraft and were bused to the terminal.

United Airlines stated that it would remove the aircraft from the taxiway and "work with the NTSB, FAA, and Boeing to understand what happened." This is the third event involving a United Boeing aircraft this week. Boeing and United shares were both down 1 per cent on Friday.

The day earlier, a Boeing 777-200 headed to Japan lost tyre shortly after departure from San Francisco. The plane was rerouted to Los Angeles, where it landed safely. There were 249 passengers on the aircraft. On Monday, a United Boeing 737 headed for Florida departing Houston had to return to the airport shortly after takeoff as the engine had swallowed some plastic bubble wrap that had been on the airfield before the departure, the airline said.

In a related development, the NTSB announced that it is looking into a Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight that experienced "stuck" rudder pedals after it touched down on the runway for its landing last month.
