Roman Reigns, also known as “The Tribal Chief” and “Head of the Table,” has become one of WWE's most dominant and famous superstars. While fans know him for his explosive matches and powerful promos, there are several lesser-known facts about him that are worth exploring. From overcoming life-threatening illness to his past in football, here's a look at five surprising details about Roman Reigns’ life and career.
1. Alleged Link To Steroid Distribution Ring
In 2018, Roman Reigns’ name was unexpectedly mentioned in a controversial case involving a massive steroid distribution ring. Jailed steroid dealer Richard Rodriguez claimed that Reigns, along with several celebrities and professional athletes, was among his clients. However, no concrete evidence linked Reigns to any illegal activity, and he was never charged or officially implicated. The allegations remain unverified, and many regard them as mere rumors. Reigns has continued his career without incident since.
2. A Two-Time Cancer Survivor
Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of Roman Reigns' life is his battle with cancer—not once, but twice. In 2007, at just 22 years old, Reigns was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a rare form of cancer. He went into remission and began his professional wrestling career.
In 2018, Reigns shocked fans by revealing that his leukemia had returned. He stepped away from WWE to focus on treatment and health. In early 2019, he announced he was in remission once again and made a triumphant return to the ring, earning widespread respect for his resilience and openness.
3. WWE Suspension In 2016
Despite his popularity, Roman Reigns hasn’t had a flawless WWE career. In 2016, he was suspended for 30 days due to a violation of WWE’s Wellness Policy. Reports suggested that he failed a drug test prior to a scheduled match. Reigns took full responsibility and addressed fans directly, owning up to his mistake and vowing to come back stronger, something he certainly did.
4. A Former Football Star
Before dominating the squared circle, Roman Reigns was a defensive tackle for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team. Though he went undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft, he had brief stints with both the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars. His football experience helped shape his athletic style in the ring.
5. College Graduate With Management Degree
Away from the ring, Reigns, real name Leati Joseph Anoa'i, is also highly educated. He earned a degree in management from Georgia Tech University, showing he has both brains and brawn. Despite having the credentials for a corporate career, he chose to follow his passion for sports and entertainment.
