The Green Park International Stadium, Kanpur, is set to get a major facelift with a beautification and redevelopment project worth about Rs 250 crore. The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has prepared a detailed three-phase plan to restore the historic venue to its former glory.

As part of the project, the dilapidated C and D balconies will be demolished to make way for a new three-storey VVIP gallery with seating for 15,000 spectators, including 500 VVIPs. The overall spectator capacity of the stadium will be increased from 27,400 to 50,000.

UPCA officials said that once the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is approved, work will begin during the off-season. The final outline of the plan will be presented at the association’s annual general meeting scheduled for the end of September.

Other key upgrades include renaming galleries after former cricketers, replacing the existing floodlights, and installing a modern sub-surface drainage system to ensure matches are not interrupted due to a waterlogged outfield.

The proposal follows the recent India-Bangladesh Test at Green Park, after which the Divisional Commissioner, UPCA officials, Sports Department representatives, and the BCCI’s technical team discussed long-term improvements.
