Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced, on Sunday, during the Denotified Tribes Day (Vimukt Jati Diwas) ceremony, that the Uttar Pradesh government will constitute a special board for the welfare of nomadic and denotified tribes. He also said a scheme will be developed to provide colonies and houses to members of these communities.
Addressing the gathering, Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to communities like Nat, Banjara, Bawariya, Sansi, Kanjar, Kalbelia, Sapera, and Jogi, calling them brave warriors who fought against Mughal and British invaders. He recalled how the British Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 labelled these communities as criminals by birth, a stigma that persisted until August 31, 1952, when they were finally freed through the efforts of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar. Denotified Tribes Day commemorates this historic moment of liberation.

The Chief Minister highlighted various initiatives for these communities under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalayas in nine districts, two residential Ashram Paddhati schools, and 101 operational residential schools, where students receive accommodation, food, and uniforms. Additionally, special facilities are provided in 264 state-run Scheduled Caste hostels.
Citing examples, Yogi said communities like Vantangiya, Musahar, Kol, Tharu, Gaur, Chero, Sahariya, Kumhar, Nishad, and Rajbhar have benefitted from government schemes, receiving revenue villages, land deeds, housing, schools, hospitals, and voting rights. He instructed Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun to constitute a board specifically for nomadic tribes and assured that model schemes similar to those for Shamli and Vantangiyas will be implemented for them.
The Chief Minister also noted that many youth from nomadic tribes have been recruited in the state police, reflecting the government’s commitment to equal opportunities.
Cabinet Ministers Sanjay Nishad, Asim Arun, Narendra Kashyap, Sanjeev Gaur, Baijnath Rawat, Bechan Ram, Jeet Singh Kharwar, Vishwanath Prasad, YP Singh, Bhagwan Nath, Dr Shobha Chaudhary, and several other dignitaries were present at the event.
