In a major step towards strengthening crime control, the Uttar Pradesh Police has digitised the fingerprints of 4,14,473 criminals under the National Automated Finger Print Identification System (NAFIS). These records have been shared with nine STF units, one ATS unit, and 12 GRP units, significantly aiding in the swift identification of criminals.
Alongside this, the state is expanding its forensic capabilities with the establishment of six new modern forensic laboratories in Ayodhya, Basti, Banda, Azamgarh, Mirzapur, and Saharanpur.
With this addition, Uttar Pradesh will have a total of 18 forensic labs, compared to just four earlier. Officials said this expansion will ensure timely forensic reports for police and courts, which earlier faced delays due to limited facilities.
NAFIS has also enhanced the police’s ability to quickly access details of criminals’ past activities and is proving crucial in the identification of unidentified bodies. The government has further emphasised the appointment of scientists and experts to forensic labs for the effective implementation of the recently introduced BMS, BMSS, and BSA-2023 Acts.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate a three-day international summit at the Uttar Pradesh State Forensic Science Institute on Monday. The conference will focus on critical issues, including cybercrime, multilateral legal frameworks, forensics, and strategic countermeasures.
