UP Weather: Schools Closed, Trains Cancelled As Dense Fog, Cold Conditions Grip Varanasi, Lucknow; Yellow Alert Issued

Uttar Pradesh Weather Today: Uttar Pradesh is currently experiencing a severe cold wave and dense fog, which has disrupted daily life and severely crippled rail and road transport, with visibility dropping to zero in multiple districts. In view of adverse weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, warning of dense fog and cold conditions for several regions, including Lucknow, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj, Bareilly, and Ayodhya.

In addition, authorities have ordered that all schools, from Nursery to Class 12, will remain closed until January 1, 2026. Several trains and flights to and from the state have already faced delays or cancellations. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and avoid non-essential travel during the early morning and at night.

UP Weather Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several regions, warning of dense fog and "Cold Day" conditions until December 30. Districts like Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Agra, Etawah, Auraiya, Bijnor, Moradabad, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur and Badaun are expected to experience cold day conditions over the next two days.

The maximum temperature is expected to be around 17 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will settle at a low of 7 degrees Celsius. Residents are expected to experience a slight improvement in weather conditions from December 31.

Trains Cancelled, Schools Closed In UP

As a thick blanket of fog continued to engulf several regions, authorities have ordered all schools across the state, from Nursery to Class 12, to remain closed until January 1, 2026. This mandate applies to all boards, including CBSE, ICSE, and the UP Board.

Extreme weather conditions and a freight train derailment in the Asansol division have severely impacted rail travel, leading to a wave of cancellations across key routes.

The 13005 Howrah-Amritsar Punjab Mail did not depart on Sunday and is scheduled for cancellation in Lucknow today. Train number 13006, Amritsar-Howrah Punjab Mail, will be cancelled on December 30 due to a rake shortage.

Similarly, the 12369 Kumbh Express was cancelled on Sunday. Additionally, due to the unavailability of coaches for the return leg, the Kumbh Express will remain cancelled from its originating station today, December 29, and will not arrive in Lucknow on December 30.
