Colombia on August 17 was hit by a massive earthquake of 6.3 magnitude on the Richter Scale. Panic ensued as soon as people felt the tremors of the earthquake and began rushing out of their homes. The capital of the country, Bogota, was among the worst-hit cities where the authorities blazed loud sirens to warn the people about the earthquake. One casualty was reported due to the earthquake after a woman jumped from her residential building's balcony.

Soon after the quake, social media was flooded with videos of the moments when the earthquake began. The videos were recorded in different locations, some of which also displayed panic among the people as they reached an open area for safety. “Moment when 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit #Bogotá in #Colombia,” read an X post (formerly Twitter), with a video of an open restaurant shaking.

“This dog doesn’t loses his composure and runs away during the tremors,” read another post.

The video of the woman who lost her life while trying to escape from the building also surfaced on social media. “In #Madelena a woman could not bear the shock of the 6.3 earthquake and she jumped from her apartment on the 7th floor. Unfortunately the lady died when she fell,” read the post.

Delicate situation at the @ESPNColombiafacilities during the earthquake that occurred at #Bogotá,” read another post. In the clip, news anchors were seen reading the news while the studio continued to shake around them.

“Colleagues in #Bogota who send what the evacuations are like and the sound of the alarms, with the NEW TREMOR,” read a post. In the video, some people were seen running to safety while an alarm was heard in the background.

The country was hit by the strong quake at 12:04 PM, with El Calvario as the epicentre, according to Colombian Geological Survey (CGS). The town is 40 kilometres southeast of Bogota. The earthquake was also reportedly followed by a 5.9 magnitude aftershock.
