As tensions between Iran and the United States escalate following US airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, Tehran has warned that every American military personnel in the Middle East could become a target. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that Iran reserves "all options" to defend its sovereignty, while state media intensified warnings directed at Washington.
With nearly 40,000 to 50,000 American troops stationed across the Middle East, the region remains a critical arena for US strategic operations. These deployments, under the umbrella of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), span countries like Bahrain, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Here is a closer look at some of the major US military installations across the region:
Bahrain: Naval Support Activity And Fifth Fleet
Bahrain hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet and Naval Forces Central Command at the Naval Support Activity Bahrain. A key maritime hub since 1948, the deep-water port accommodates aircraft carriers and houses multiple vessels, including anti-mine ships and Coast Guard cutters. It is the cornerstone of American naval presence in the Persian Gulf.
Qatar: Al Udeid Air Base
Located just southwest of Doha, Al Udeid Air Base is the largest US military base in the Middle East. Serving as the forward headquarters for CENTCOM, it hosts over 10,000 troops and about 100 aircraft and drones. Built in 1996, the base has supported operations in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
Iraq: Al Asad And Erbil Air Bases
The United States maintains approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq, mainly at Al Asad and Erbil air bases. These installations support anti-ISIS missions and house advanced intelligence and logistics capabilities. Al Asad was previously targeted by Iran in 2020 following the assassination of Qasem Soleimani.
UAE: Al Dhafra Air Base
Located near Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra hosts the Air Force’s 380th Air Expeditionary Wing. The installation includes stealth F-22 Raptor fighter jets and several surveillance platforms, playing a vital role in reconnaissance and regional air superiority.
Kuwait: Ali Al-Salem Air Base
Situated roughly 20 miles from the Iraqi border, this base hosts the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing. It plays a pivotal role in transport, logistics, and regional airlift missions.
Syria: Al Tanf Garrison
Al Tanf, near the Iraq-Jordan border, is used to counter ISIS and deter Iranian influence in southern Syria. The garrison was close to Tower 22, which was attacked by an Iranian-backed militia in early 2024, resulting in U.S. casualties.
As US involvement deepens, these bases could be targeted by Iran or its proxies in retaliation. The Pentagon is reportedly on high alert, reinforcing missile defence systems and advising personnel of possible threats across the region.
