'Will Cut Off Those Hands': Pakistan Minister's Empty Threat To India As New Delhi Keeps Indus Waters Treaty Suspended

Pakistan has once again issued an empty threat to India as tensions continue over the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The latest remarks came from Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, who said Islamabad would firmly respond to any attempts to stop Pakistan’s share of river water.

Pakistan Minister's Warning To India

Speaking at a joint press conference with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Malik accused India of trying to control Pakistan's water supply. Referring to statements made by Indian political leaders, Malik said, “There is a tap being controlled by the prime minister of a neighbouring country. He says he will not let even a drop of water flow into Pakistan.”

Strengthening his attacks further, Malik added, “We will cut off those hands who lay claim to our share of water." His comments were reported by Pakistani broadcaster 24NewsHD and several other media outlets. While video clips of his remarks have also appeared online, their authenticity could not be independently verified.

Tarar also defended Pakistan's position on the treaty. He said the Indus Waters Treaty remains legally valid and cannot be suspended, revoked or changed by one country alone. “Indus Treaty is still in force as India's stance has not been accepted at any platform,” he said. Tarar added that Pakistan's position had received international support and argued that the country's rights under the treaty remain protected by international law.

"Our people have a right to water through a legally enforceable treaty that was accepted by both countries that remains implemented today," Tarar said. He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir have repeatedly declared that "water is our lifeline, as well as our red line."

Pakistan To Host Seminar On IWT

The ministers also announced that Islamabad would host the first international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty. According to Tarar, Pakistan’s legal rights under the treaty would be discussed in the seminar attended by legal experts, water specialists and foreign delegates.

Why Did India Suspend IWT?

The dispute over the river water has intensified after India put the treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 that killed 26 civilians. The IWT, signed in 1960 with the World Bank as a mediator, has governed water sharing between India and Pakistan for more than six decades. In 2025, India announced that the treaty would remain suspended until Pakistan "credibly and irrevocably" ended support for cross-border terrorism.

The treaty divides the waters of the Indus river system between the two countries. Under the agreement, India has control over the eastern rivers, including the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. On the other hand, Pakistan receives most of the waters from the western rivers, including Indus, Jhelum and Chenab.
