- Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine.
- Kyiv and other areas suffered heavy damage.
- EU official Kaja Kallas and President Zelenskyy strongly condemned the strikes.
Russia-Ukraine War: Russia on Sunday confirmed that it carried out a large overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine, including the use of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile. The strikes hit several areas across the country, including the capital Kyiv, causing deaths, injuries, and widespread damage to civilian infrastructure.
Russia Launches Massive Attack On Ukraine
Ukrainian officials said it was one of the most intense attacks in recent weeks. According to reports, around 600 drones and 90 missiles were fired across Ukraine. While many were intercepted by air defence systems, several still hit their targets. Videos shared online show a missile striking central Kyiv, followed by a bright flash and a large explosion.
Zelenskyy Condemns Strikes, Slams Putin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it an assault on civilian life and infrastructure. In a series of posts on X, he noted that the attack caused widespread destruction in Kyiv, damaging residential buildings, schools, markets, and a water supply facility. Zelenskyy claimed that Russia used the Oreshnik missile during the strike, targeting areas such as Bila Tserkva.
He wrote, "Putin can’t even pronounce the word “hurrah” clearly anymore – slurs and mumbles – yet he is still vanquishing residential buildings with his missiles. Launched three Russian missiles against a water supply facility. Burned down a market. Damaged dozens of residential buildings. Hit several ordinary schools. Launched his “Oreshnik” against Bila Tserkva. They really are unhinged." Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said the attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on areas under Russian control.
Since last night, first responders and all necessary services have been working wherever needed. As of now, at least 83 people have been confirmed injured since midnight. Tragically, there are fatalities. My condolences to the families and loved ones.

Russia Uses Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile
The Oreshnik is a Russian intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). It is a very fast missile that can travel at around ten times the speed of sound. It is designed to hit deep underground targets like bunkers and strongly protected military sites. Reports suggest that Russia first used this missile in Dnipro in November 2024, and later in Lviv in January. Russia has confirmed using the Oreshnik again in this latest attack.
Tonight, Russia launched one of the largest attacks on Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion — ballistic missiles, drones, and “Oreshnik” weapon.

The missile is believed to carry multiple warheads (MIRV), which makes it more complex and difficult to intercept. Military analysts say the Oreshnik travels through the upper atmosphere, making it difficult for Ukraine’s current air defence systems to detect and stop.
EU Condemns Use Of Oreshnik
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also strongly criticised Russia over its use of the nuclear-capable missile system. She said Moscow is attempting to “terrorise Ukraine” through large-scale strikes on urban centres after facing setbacks on the battlefield.
In a post on X, Kallas said Russia has “hit a dead-end on the battlefield” and is now carrying out deliberate attacks on city centres. She described the strikes as “abhorrent acts of terror” aimed at causing maximum civilian casualties.
Russia hit a dead-end on the battlefield, so it terrorizes Ukraine with deliberate strikes on city centres.
