A meme-filled storm erupted online after a viral image jokingly linked cricketer Virat Kohli's retirement announcement to US President Donald Trump's ceasefire announcement between India and Pakistan. A day after India and Pakistan agreed to cease all military action following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Trump administration swiftly claimed credit for brokering the deal. Twitter and Instagram are flooded with satirical posts, turning Trump’s statement into a trending topic.

The image, designed in Trump’s signature statement style in which US President announced India-Pakistan ceasefire, read: “After a long night of talks with Virattt Koolie, I am pleased to announce that he has announced his retirement from Test cricket. Fantastic player, I love him so much. By the way, I love Soochin Tendulkar, but Virat was special.”

Clearly intended as satire, the image gained traction rapidly, igniting a flood of memes, jokes, and mock analyses. One user commented sarcastically, “Trump is behind the retirement of Virat Kohli.” Others joined in, saying Trump had announced Kohli’s retirement even before the cricketer himself.

Trump's Name Gaffe Resurfaces

Adding fuel to the comedic fire was a resurfaced video clip from Trump’s 2020 visit to India, where he mispronounced the names of Indian cricket legends during his speech at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. “This is a country where your people cheer on some of the world’s great crickets players—from ‘Soo-chin Tendulkerr’ to ‘Virot Ko-lee,’” Trump declared to a cheering crowd. While the audience was enthusiastic, social media was divided, some amused by his effort, others less forgiving of his pronunciation errors.
