The BJP, JDU-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) registered a resounding victory on Friday, November, in the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, securing 202 seats out of a total of 243 assembly seats. The result ensured that the NDA crossed ‘200-seat’ mark for the second time in the state after the 2010 Bihar Assembly Elections.

On the other hand, the state’s major opposition bloc, the Mahagathbandhan, was reduced from its previous tally of 110 seats to only 35 seats. All the parties of the alliance, including Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, which contested on 135 seats, out of which it won only 25 seats. The Congress also shrank to a single digit in the state, winning just 6 seats, while the left parties lost important pockets of influence.

Winners For NDA

Nitish Kumar:

- Perhaps the most detrimental factor that went in favour of NDA was Nitish Kumar’s ‘sushasan ki sarkar’, which not only tilted the mandate in favour of the coalition but countered the growing anti-incumbency in the state.

- JDU won 85 seats in this year’s election, thereby ensuring the septuagenarian politician a record fifth term as Chief Minister of the state.

- Another factor that worked for the NDA was Nitish Kumar’s political clout to woo the women voters of the state, who became instrumental in shaping the mandate. For the first time, women voters exceeded the men by almost 9 per cent- 71.6% vs 62.8%.

- Welfare schemes targeting women, including the Rs 10,000 Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana, helped consolidate support among poorer and backward communities.

Chirag Paswan:

- After JD(U), the most remarkable political comeback has been that of Chirag Paswan’s LJP.

- Shouldering the tough responsibility of his father, Ram Vilas Paswan, Chirag Paswan’s leadership came under the scanner when his party managed to win only one seat in 2020. However, in 2025, the tables turned for LJP, and they managed to win 19 out of 29 seats in the assembly.

- The consolidation of the Paswan vote and Chirag's appeal among young voters and Dalit communities played a key role in this drastic shift in the seats.

Asaduddin Owaisi:

- Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM maintained its stronghold in the Seemanchal region, continuing from 2020 Bihar Assembly Elections.

- The region has a strong Muslim population (approximately 47 per cent) and could have proven to be a critical voter base for the Mahagathbandhan, considering the MY factor (Muslim-Yadav), which has traditionally played in favour of RJD.

- But the strong performance of Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) dented the Muslim voter base for RJD.

- According to ECI, AIMIM won five seats in the region- Jokihat, Bahadurganj, Kochadhaman, Amour and Baisi. Incidentally, Jokihat, Kochadhaman, Amour, and Baisi were also secured by the party in the 2020 Assembly elections.

Jitan Ram Manjhi And Upendra Kushwaha:

- NDA’s smaller partners, Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha, also contributed to the win for NDA.

Losers For Mahagathbandhan

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)

- For the opposition, the biggest failure has been Tejashwi Yadav’s election campaign and his political image which was unable to translate anti-incumbency against Nitish Kumar into votes.

- It was RJD’s second-worst tally after 2010 tally of 22 seats. Tejashwi Yadav however managed to win from Raghopur.

Rahul Gandhi

- The Congress yet again failed to make any significant dent in the electoral system of Bihar.

- Last time, the party had won 19 seats in the assembly election, which has come down to 6 this time.

- It means that despite Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ and allegations of ‘Vote Chori’ did not connect with the electorate.

Prashant Kishor

- Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj party suffered a major setback in the Bihar Assembly elections, failing to win any seats and polling fewer votes than NOTA.

- His development-focused campaign failed to gain traction, and the party's decision not to contest seats added to the confusion.

Mukesh Sahani

- Projected as the Deputy Chief Minister and a key challenger in the Seemanchal region, Mukesh Sahani failed to win any seat this time.

- The VIP failed to convert its caste-based mobilisation into seats. The Nishad vote, which he sought to consolidate, drifted toward the NDA, attracted by welfare guarantees.
