In a major crackdown on arms trafficking, Patna police have arrested a smuggler involved in supplying illegal firearms and ammunition in the city. The accused, identified as Mohd Azad alias Sonu, was apprehended from Noon ka Chauraha. Another associate, Mohammad Mumtaz of Alija Market, who procured weapon parts and supplied them to Sonu for assembly, has also been identified.
During searches of their homes, police recovered one pistol, one country-made pistol (katta), 63 bullets of different bores, and one magazine. SP East Parichay Kumar said that the interrogation of Sonu has revealed the names of several people to whom he supplied weapons and bullets. Most of the buyers are reportedly involved in criminal activities. Police are currently verifying their identities and criminal backgrounds.
Over the past month, the police have intensified operations against arms smugglers. From Patna’s western region, authorities have recovered one AK-47, two rifles, one gun, eight pistols, 16 country-made pistols, one revolver, 11 magazines, and 289 bullets.
Earlier in August, intelligence from notorious arms trafficker Raushan Sharma, arrested in Jehanabad, led to the seizure of a large quantity of weapons and bullets from the Phulwari Sharif police station area. A mini gun factory was uncovered, where materials for illegal weapon manufacturing were recovered.
SP Kumar said Sonu has been involved in arms smuggling for the past three years and has reportedly sold weapons to 15 individuals. Police are investigating whether he is part of a larger smuggling network.
