ITR Filling: The Income Tax Department processed over 40 million income tax returns (ITRs) in 15 days after the deadline for filing ITRs for the assessment year 2024-25, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra stated. While speaking at the 165th Income Tax Day celebrations, Malhotra stated that of the 72.8 million ITRs filed by July 31, 2024, over 49.8 million ITRs have already been processed. Of those returns, 39.2 million were processed in less than 15 days.
We have progressed in digitalization…over 40 million returns were processed in 15 days, Malhotra stated.
The Revenue Secretary also shared statistics on the rise in direct tax revenue over the last decade. Revenue increased from Rs 5.59 lakh crore to Rs 20 lakh crore, significantly expanding the country's tax base. Furthermore, the tax-to-GDP ratio increased modestly but significantly from 5.6 percent to 6 percent during this period.

Experts suggest that as the tax department uses technology and streamlines its processes, taxpayers can anticipate a more seamless and responsive income tax filing experience in the coming years.
How to check ITR Refund Status
The income tax refund process can be tracked online through the official website of the Income Tax Department's. Below are the steps to check the refund status of the income tax return.
- First Visit the e-filing website, the official website of income tax
- Next, Log in using your PAN details.
- Once logged in, Find the ‘My Account’ section on the home page.
- Click on the “Refund/Demand Status” button.
You will see the status of your income tax refund, which will include information like assessment year, current status, reason for any refund failure, and payment method.
