Pragya Misra News: OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has recruited its first employee in India and appointed Pragya Misra as head of government relations amid ongoing elections in the country that will form AI regulations, Bloomberg reports. The Microsoft Corporation-backed OpenAI has appointed Pragya Misra to look after public policy and partnership matters in India, as reported by Bloomberg. Misra, who is 39 years old, previously worked at Truecaller AB and Meta Platform Inc. She is expected to begin her role at OpenAI later this month.
India has significant potential
The company's new appointment shows that they are working to achieve positive AI regulations as countries figure out how to regulate it. India is a large market with significant growth potential, but it is difficult because local laws shield local enterprises.
Who is Pragya Misra?
As stated on her LinkedIn profile, Pragya Misra graduated with an MBA from the International Institute of Management in 2012. She studied commerce at the University of Delhi and earned a Diploma in Negotiation from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Since July 2021, Mishra has served as Truecaller's Director of Public Affairs, a role that requires her to work closely with government ministries, key stakeholders, investors, and media partners to advance the company's agenda. Before this, she worked at Meta Platform Inc. for three years. At Meta, Pragya Misra led WhatsApp's campaign against misinformation in 2018. She has also worked at Ernst & Young and the Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi.
OpenAI planning to set up a local team in India
OpenAI is also considering establishing a local team in India. It does not have an official presence in India yet, except for a trademark it obtained this month. When CEO Sam Altman visited New Delhi during his world tour in June of last year, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had positive discussions. During the two-day visit, however, neither Altman nor OpenAI made any announcements.
