AUS vs WI ODIs: Steve Smith will lead Australia in the upcoming ODI series against West Indies while pacer Mance Morris has earned his maiden call-up in the 50-over format as Cricket Australia announced the squad on Wednesday.

Australia have rested regular captain Pat Cummins and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh along with pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood after the hectic ODI World Cup 2023 in India and the three-match home Test series against Pakistan.

Fast bowler Jhye Richardson has been recalled to the ODI side after he last played in the Sri Lanka tour in 2022. Aaron Hardie and Matt Short are also named in the squad alongside Nathan Ellis.

"It is a little over 12 months until the Champions Trophy and further opportunities for the likes of Aaron Hardie, Matt Short, Jhye Richardson, and Nathan Ellis will be valuable both to our ongoing improvement as a team and also further their personal experiences in ODI cricket," national selector George Bailey said.

"The squad strikes a balance between players continuing to make their mark on international cricket, playing alongside some of our most experienced players with an eye to the future in this format," he added.

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been left out of the ODI side despite being part of Australia's title-winning World Cup campaign in November last year.

The first ODI of the series will be played at Melbourne Cricket Ground on February 2 after the conclusion of the two-match Test series, commencing on January 17.

Australia ODI squad for West Indies series: Steve Smith (captain), Travis Head, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Matt Short, Adam Zampa.
