Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) is all set to create history by playing its first-ever match outside Australia. The opening game of the 2026-27 season will be hosted by Chennai on December 12.

The season opener will feature Melbourne Renegades against defending champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. It will also be the first time an overseas franchise T20 league has staged an official match in India.

Chennai to Host Historic Opening Match

The much-awaited contest will kick off the new BBL season in one of India’s biggest cricket cities. While ticket details and other commercial plans are still being worked out, organisers expect a strong turnout from local fans.

“Australia and India are united by our love and passion for sport,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

“I am excited to expand cooperation with India on sport, which not only brings joy to Australians but boosts trade, tourism and investment.”

The match will also be the main attraction of a week-long festival called ‘G’day Namaste’, which will include Australian business, sports and cultural events across India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed the initiative while speaking alongside Albanese at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“I am confident that just like in sports, our partnership too will become a champion in every field,” he said.

Cricket Australia Looking Forward to Chennai Debut

Cricket Australia believes Chennai is the perfect place to host the league’s first overseas game because of the city’s deep love for cricket.

“We know they’re incredibly passionate cricket fans all over India, but particularly in Chennai,” BBL chief Alistair Dobson said.

“Everyone we’ve spoken to has been really optimistic that we should expect a good crowd.”

Since the league began, every BBL match has been played in Australia. The Chennai fixture will mark a new chapter in the tournament’s history.

Perth Scorchers also welcomed the opportunity to play in India and reach a much larger cricket audience.

“This is a genuinely historic moment for Perth Scorchers and for cricket in Western Australia,” Western Australia cricket chief John Stephenson said.

“India is the heartland of global cricket, and bringing the Scorchers to that audience is an opportunity we have embraced wholeheartedly.”

The Chennai match is expected to be an important step in the BBL’s plans to grow its global presence. If the event is successful, it could open the door for more overseas matches in the coming years.
