From Most Sixes In ODIs To Most 100s As Opener In International Cricket: List Of Records Rohit Sharma Might Break In 1st ODI

IND vs SA 1st ODI: India's star batter Rohit Sharma, who is currently the World No.1 ODI batter, will be playing as an opener in the series opener against South Africa. In the first ODI, Rohit, who had hit a fifty and a hundred in the three-match ODI series last month against Australia, will try to repeat his heroics and help the hosts lead the series by 1-0.

The first ODI will be held in Ranchi, where Rohit might get a chance to break lots of records, including becoming the 4th Indian to have scored 20,000 runs in international cricket and being the batter who has hit the most sixes in this format.

Here’s a look at the list of records Rohit Sharma can break during the 1st India-South Africa ODI in Ranchi:

He has hit 349 sixes after playing in 276 ODIs till now. If he can hit at least three more sixes in the first match, then he will surpass Shahid Afridi's tally of smashing the most sixes in this format. In his 19-year-long ODI career, Afridi has played in 398 ODI matches, where he has hit 351 sixes.

Most sixes in ODIs

He needs to score 98 runs in the series opener to achieve the milestone of scoring 20,000 runs in international cricket. Till now, he has smashed 19,902 runs after playing in 502 matches. Till now, 13 batters have smashed more than 20,000 runs. Rohit will have to score 98 runs to join the elite list of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli, who have scored 20,000 runs in international cricket. If Rohit is able to score 113 runs, then he will go past AB de Villiers in the list of batters who have scored the most runs in international cricket. ABD had played in 420 matches, where he had scored 20,014 runs.

Rohit has hit 58 sixes after playing in 55 matches till now against South Africa. If he can hit seven sixes, then he will surpass David Warner's tally of smashing the most sixes against them. He does have the record of hitting the most sixes against teams like Australia (138), Sri Lanka (86), and West Indies (88).

If he can smash a ton in the series opener, then he will break the record of smashing the most 100s as an opener for the host. Till now, he has equalled his record with Sachin Tendulkar, who ended his career by scoring 45 hundreds as an opener. David Warner is the only batter who has smashed the most hundreds as an opener.

Most 100s as an opener in international cricket

If Rohit is able to score at least 133 runs, then he will be the third batter, besides Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, to have scored 5000 runs in this format. He has scored 4867 runs after playing in 94 ODI matches till now in India. In his 23-year-long ODI career, Tendulkar had smashed 6967 runs, and Kohli had smashed 6325 runs after playing in 124 ODIs in India.

At the same time, Rohit might also achieve the milestone of scoring 2000 runs in international cricket against the Proteas and also hit the most sixes in this format as an opener.
