Shubman Gill-led India created history in the second ODI against West Indies, chasing down a mammoth target of 406 runs to secure an eight-wicket win at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. The victory gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gill and Rohit Sharma led the charge with centuries as India completed their highest successful run chase in ODI cricket. The visitors had put up a massive 405/7 after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo, but even that go in vain against India’s batting firepower.

The match saw several records tumble, with Gill producing a double century and Rohit reaching another major milestone. From the fastest 300 in ODI history to five centuries in a single match, here are the major records broken during the India vs West Indies second ODI.

India Reach 300 in Just 175 Balls

India set a new record by reaching 300 runs in just 29.1 overs, or 175 balls, during their chase of 406.

The previous record belonged to South Africa, who reached 300 in 32.2 overs against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.

India’s aggressive approach meant the required run rate never became a major concern, even while chasing a target of more than 400.

Five Centuries in a Single ODI for the First Time

The Guwahati ODI became the first men’s ODI to feature five individual centuries.

West Indies set the tone with three hundreds in their innings. John Campbell scored 101 off 68 balls, captain Shai Hope made 104 off 94 deliveries, and Amir Jangoo struck 114 off just 77 balls.

India matched that effort with centuries from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

The five hundreds made the contest a rare occasion in ODI cricket, with both teams producing outstanding performances with the bat.

India Complete Their Highest Successful ODI Chase

Chasing 406, India finished on 406/2 in just 43.3 overs, with 39 balls to spare.

It was India’s highest successful run chase in ODI cricket, surpassing their previous best of 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.

The result also gave India the second-highest successful run chase in men’s ODI history.

South Africa continue to hold the record after chasing down 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006, finishing on 438/9.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill Equal India’s Second-Highest Opening Stand

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India the perfect start, adding 255 runs for the opening wicket in just 26.2 overs.

The partnership equalled India’s second-highest opening stand in men’s ODI cricket, matching the 255-run effort by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly against Kenya in 2001.

Their partnership put India firmly in control of the chase and gave the middle order very little work to do.

Shubman Gill Scores the Highest Individual Score in an ODI Chase

Gill produced a stunning unbeaten 223 off 133 balls to lead India to victory.

His innings became the highest individual score in a successful or attempted men’s ODI run chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai.

Gill Breaks the Record for the Fastest ODI Double Century

Gill reached his double century in just 117 balls, setting a new record for the fastest double hundred in men’s ODI cricket.

He broke the previous record held by Ishan Kishan, who had taken 126 balls to score a double century against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.

The India captain’s achievement was another highlight of an innings that completely changed the course of the match.

Gill Becomes Only the Second Batter With Multiple ODI Double Centuries

Gill’s unbeaten 223 was his second double century in ODI cricket.

His first came against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, when he scored 208 off 149 balls.

With his latest effort, Gill became only the second batter in men’s ODI history to score multiple double centuries, joining Rohit Sharma.

Rohit remains the only batter with three ODI double hundreds.

Rohit Sharma Crosses 12,000 ODI Runs

Rohit Sharma added another major milestone to his career by crossing 12,000 runs in men’s ODI cricket.

He became the seventh batter overall and only the third Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, to reach the landmark.

Rohit achieved the feat in his 282nd ODI innings, adding another achievement to his decorated cricketing career.

Rohit Sharma Registers His 35th ODI Century

Rohit turned his strong start into a century, scoring 101 off 75 balls.

It was his 35th ODI hundred and another important contribution in India’s record chase.

His aggressive batting at the top of the order helped India build momentum early in the innings, allowing Gill to play his natural attacking game at the other end.

The pair’s 255-run stand left India needing only a manageable contribution from the remaining batters.

Rohit Adds to His ODI Six-Hitting Records

Rohit also continued to add to his impressive six-hitting record during the innings.

His sixes against West Indies further strengthened his standing among the leading six-hitters in international cricket.

Alongside Gill, he kept the pressure on the West Indies bowlers from the beginning, ensuring that India’s chase remained on track.

West Indies Register Their Highest ODI Total

West Indies had plenty to celebrate before India’s record-breaking chase began.

Their total of 405/7 was the highest in the team’s ODI history, powered by centuries from Campbell, Hope and Jangoo.

Campbell’s 101 off 68 balls, Hope’s 104 off 94 and Jangoo’s 114 off 77 helped West Indies cross the 400-run mark for the first time in their ODI history.

However, their historic total was not enough to prevent India from taking control of the series.

Gill’s 62-Ball Century Sets Up His Double Hundred

Gill’s innings gathered pace quickly as he reached his century in just 62 balls.

It was the fastest ODI hundred of his career and, according to match reports, the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain.

He needed only another 55 balls to move from 100 to 200, underlining the pace at which he scored his double century.

His acceleration ensured that India remained comfortably ahead of the required run rate during the chase.

A Record-Breaking Night in Guwahati

The second ODI between India and West Indies produced a series of remarkable batting records.

West Indies posted their highest ODI total of 405/7, while India responded with their highest successful chase in the format. The match also saw five centuries, a record-breaking double hundred from Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma crossing 12,000 ODI runs.

Gill remained unbeaten on 223, while Rohit scored 101 as India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs to seal an eight-wicket victory.

The win gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and made the Guwahati ODI one of the most memorable high-scoring contests in the format.
