- ICC confirmed the sanctions on Monday.
- Both players were charged under Article 2.12.
- The talking point came shortly after Fernando finally dismissed Jaiswal.
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando have been fined 25 per cent of their match fees and awarded one demerit point each for their clash during the opening day of the second Test in Colombo.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the penalty on Monday following the players being found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
The incident took place after Fernando got Jaiswal out in the 17th over of India’s first innings on Sunday.
They have violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which is concerned with unfair physical contact with the player, player support personnel, official, match referee, or any person during an international match.
According to the ICC, Jaiswal walked towards Fernando after his dismissal and the pair exchanged words.
Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, before the Indian batter leaned in, resulting in contact between their heads. The heated argument was brought under control by players from both sides before it escalated.

On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella confirmed the incident.
What Happened Between Jaiswal And Fernando?
The talking point came shortly after Fernando finally dismissed Jaiswal for 45 runs. The Indian opener had looked well settled before the Sri Lankan pacer breached his defence in the 17th over.
Fernando's animated celebration appeared to lead to an exchange of words. Jaiswal initially moved away but then turned back towards the bowler, with the two players coming face-to-face. The confrontation quickly escalated, with their heads making contact before teammates intervened.

Former India batter Ajay Jadeja also criticised Jaiswal's involvement in the confrontation, while India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak suggested that the youngster should have maintained more distance during the exchange.
Jaiswal later responded to the criticism through a comment on social media, writing: “If you don't know what he said, then please don't make your judgment. If anyone crosses the line, we need to let them know. This India will fight and reply.”
After ICC’s imposition of the sanctions, the controversy comes to an end. Both players faced consequences of the argument and will surely be cautious before involving into more.
