Indian captain Shubman Gill had a bizarre reaction as he met with a fan, who, after shaking hands with him, chanted "Pakistan Zindabad" while walking through the streets of Adelaide ahead of the 2nd ODI against Australia.
Gill will be in action on Thursday as India take on Australia at the Adelaide Oval with an aim to bounce back in the three-match series. The series marks Gill's first assignment after replacing Rohit Sharma as India's new ODI captain. India will be heading into the match on the back of a 7-wicket defeat in the opening game in Perth.
Gill, who himself had a disappointing outing with the bat in Perth, was surprised by the fan's unexpected action post-handshake, and the clip of this incident is now going viral on the internet.

Notably, the star opener was part of the Indian team in the Asia Cup 2025, which the Men in Blue won after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. India got the better of Men in Green thrice in the final, and Gill had a heated verbal exchange with one of the Pakistani players during a fixture. In the three matches against the Salman Ali Agha-led side at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Gill registered scores of 10, 47 and 12 runs.

The Asia Cup 2025 was played in the middle of a massive handshake controversy that erupted on the back of India's protest against the Pahalgam Terror Attack that took place earlier this year. The Indian players avoided the handshakes with the Pakistani players, and Suryakumar Yadav ended up dedicating the win to the victims of the Pahalgam Attack and the Indian Armed Forces for carrying out Operation Sindoor in May.

In the first ODI, Gill could only manage to score 10 runs from 18 balls. The 26-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab would like to come up with a big impact with the bat on Thursday and help the visitors level the series.
"A lot of learnings for us from this game and a lot of positives for us as well. We were defending 130 and we took the game, not till the very end, but pretty deep. We were very satisfied with that," Gill had said after India's defeat in the rain-hit Perth ODI.
