After being ruled out of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India pacer Mohammed Shami underwent a successful heel surgery to be available for the T20 World Cup in June.

Taking to X, Shami informed that he had a heel operation on his Achilles tendon and is looking forward to standing on his feet again.

β€œJust had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet,” Shami wrote.

Earlier in the month, Shami was ruled out of the IPL to get his heel operated and recover in time for this year's showpiece event in the West Indies and the USA.

Shami was the highest wicket-taker of the ODI World Cup 2023 and scalped 24 wickets in seven matches. His stellar performance included two five-wicket hauls and 7/57 against New Zealand in the semifinal, the best-ever performance by an Indian pacer in the quadrennial event.

The 33-year-old speedster has been out of cricket action after the culmination of the World Cup in Ahmedabad. Shami missed the home T20I series against Australia and Afghanistan. He was also not part of India's squad for the South Africa tour. The fast bowler remained unavailable for the ongoing five-match Test series against England due to injury.

Shami will undergo a rehabilitation process to fully recover from his injury in the coming months.

In the IPL 2024, Shami's absence will be felt by 2022 champions Gujarat Titans as was the gun bowler of the side in the last two seasons. Shami picked 20 wickets in the inaugural season for the franchise while in the last edition, he scalped 28 wickets at an average of 18.64.
