India batter Shreyas Iyer has been named in Mumbai squad for their second round match of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2023-24 match against Andhra, starting on Friday, January 12. Iyer was not named in India's squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, commencing on Thursday, January 11. He has been named in India's squad for the five-match Test series against England later this month.
Iyer will return for Mumbai in a domestic game for the first time since the 2018-19 season. In the absence of Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube, Iyer's return will be a boost for Mumbai in the upcoming match. Sarfaraz is part of India A squad to play a two-day tour game against England Lions while Dube is included in India's squad for Afghanistan T20Is.

Mumbai are already without opener Prithvi Shaw, who continues to recover from a knee injury. Captain Ajinkya Rahane, who missed the opening match against Patna due to neck spasms, is expected to return for Andhra match. In Rahane's absence, all-rounder Shams Mulani had led Mumbai to an innings and 51 runs against Patna.
Iyer made a return to India's side in the Asia Cup last year after his back surgery that ruled him out of the World Test Championship Final and West Indies tour. He excelled in the ODI World Cup for India as he struck 530 runs including two centuries and three fifties, the third-highest for the home side after Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.

He was also part of the South Africa Test series but failed to get longer innings in four starts. His highest contribution in the series was of 31 runs that came in the first innings of the Centurion Test.
With an eye on England Tests, Iyer will look to get in a grove for the tough home challenge. The first Test of the series will be played in Hyderabad from January 25.
