India captain Shubman Gill added another milestone to his growing list of achievements with a classy innings in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday.
Opening the batting in India’s chase of 259, Gill looked in complete control from the start. He scored a fluent 80 off 75 balls before retiring hurt because of cramps. His innings included 11 boundaries and a six and gave India the perfect platform for a comfortable six-wicket win.
Gill Leads India’s Chase
Gill played with confidence throughout his stay at the crease and stitched together a crucial 101-run partnership for the third wicket with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who made 35 runs.
The stand helped India recover from an early setback and kept the chase firmly on track before Axar Patel and Washington Sundar finished the job.
Gill Creates History at Edgbaston
The innings also helped Gill achieve a unique record as India captain.
With his knock of 80, Gill took his tally to 510 international runs as captain at Edgbaston, making him the first Indian skipper to score more than 500 international runs at a single venue in England.
Gill was appointed India’s Test captain in May 2025 before taking over as ODI captain in October the same year. Since then, Edgbaston has become one of his most successful grounds.
Surpasses Virat Kohli
Gill also went past Virat Kohli’s long-standing record for the most international runs by an Indian captain at a single venue in England.

Kohli had scored 469 runs in six innings across five matches as captain at Edgbaston. Gill has now moved ahead of that mark with 510 runs at the same ground.
Joins Elite List of Indian Captains
The 26-year-old also became only the seventh Indian captain to score 500 or more international runs at a single venue.
He joined an elite group that includes Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
