Axar Patel delivered one of the finest all-round performances of his ODI career as India defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series
The left-arm spinner made a big impact with both ball and bat, helping India take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. His all-round brilliance also earned him the Player of the Match award and a place in the record books.
Axar Sets Up India’s Win With Ball and Bat
Axar first impressed with the ball, finishing with figures of 4/62 in 9.5 overs. His spell played a key role in bowling England out for 258 in 47.5 overs.
He then produced another valuable contribution during the chase. Walking in under pressure, Axar remained unbeaten on 57 from just 52 deliveries as India chased down the target of 259 in 45.2 overs with six wickets to spare.
Joins Sachin Tendulkar and Hardik Pandya in Elite Club
With his all-round effort, Axar became only the third Indian cricketer to score a half-century and take four wickets in an away ODI. The only other Indians to achieve the feat are Sachin Tendulkar and Hardik Pandya.

Tendulkar was the first to do it during the Wills International Cup quarterfinal against Australia in Dhaka on October 28, 1998. The batting legend smashed 141 off 128 balls before returning figures of 4/38 in 9.1 overs.
Hardik Pandya joined the list in 2022 during an ODI against England at Old Trafford on July 17, 2022. He picked up 4/24 in seven overs and then scored 71 off 55 balls in India’s victory.
Another Rare Record Against England
Axar also became only the third Indian player to score a fifty and claim four wickets in an ODI against England.

Yuvraj Singh was the first Indian to achieve this milestone. He scored 118 from 122 balls and took 4/28 in 10 overs during the ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on November 17, 2008.
Hardik Pandya later matched the feat against England in Manchester in 2022, and Axar has now added his name to the exclusive list.
Axar, Sundar helped India to register a 6-wicket win
Axar reached his half-century in just 39 balls before finishing unbeaten on 57. He also stitched together a match-winning 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Washington Sundar, who made a composed 52 off 63 balls.
The stand took the game away from England and ensured India crossed the finish line comfortably. India are currently leading 1-0 in the three-match ODI series; the second clash will take place on June 16.
