Centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo helped West Indies post their first-ever 400-plus total in ODI cricket. The Caribbean side smashed 405/7 against India in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.
This was the first time West Indies had crossed the 400-run mark in their ODI history. Their previous highest total was 389 against England in 2019.
Campbell Sets The Tone
After being asked to bat first, West Indies got off to a flying start, with Campbell taking the attack to India’s pace bowlers.
The opener brought up his century in just 65 balls and finished with 101 runs from 68 deliveries, hitting nine fours and five sixes. A confessed admirer of Chris Gayle, Campbell played in a similar aggressive style and put India under pressure from the start.
Hope And Jangoo Keep India Under Pressure
Shai Hope then took charge and kept the scoreboard moving during the middle overs. The West Indies captain survived an important moment when Virat Kohli dropped him on 27 at short midwicket, with the ball going through his hands.
Hope made India pay for the missed chance as he went on to score 104 off 94 balls. His innings included eight fours and three sixes.
Jangoo provided another attacking boost at the other end. He combined sensible strokeplay with big hits and brought up his second ODI century off 69 balls. He eventually finished with 114 from 77 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and three sixes.
With Campbell, Hope and Jangoo all reaching three figures, West Indies also achieved another rare feat, three batters scored centuries in the same ODI innings for the first time in the team’s history.
India Pacers Struggle In Guwahati
India’s inexperienced pace attack had a difficult day on a good batting surface. With Jasprit Bumrah away on Asian Games duty and Mohammed Siraj still unavailable, India continued to look for options ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Auqib Nabi, who became the third cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to play for India, had a tough outing. He conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs without taking a wicket.
Gurnoor Brar was the most successful of the returning pacers, picking up two wickets but conceding 96 runs. Prasidh Krishna took one wicket for 45 runs in his five overs.
Naman Dhir Suffers Ankle Injury
India also suffered an injury concern during the innings. Batting all-rounder Naman Dhir twisted his ankle after bowling 6.1 overs and had to leave the field in the 36th over.
Kuldeep, Jadeja Provide Some Relief
The spinners gave India something to cheer about. Kuldeep Yadav finished with figures of 2/65 and entered the 200-wicket club in ODI cricket.
Ravindra Jadeja also picked up two wickets, although he conceded 75 runs as West Indies maintained their attacking approach and finished with a record 405/7.
