A gangster who was reportedly inspired to enter the world of crime by the movie 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' has been arrested by police following an encounter in Delhi. The accused, Sagar alias 'Maya Bhai,' was shot in the leg during the operation.
The Special Task Force (STF) of the South-East District Police arrested Sagar near the Sarita Vihar flyover on Monday night. According to DCP Hemant Tiwari, STF in-charge Inspector Shiv Kumar received a tip that the wanted criminal was traveling from Kalindi Kunj towards Sarita Vihar.
Police set up a blockade, and at around 11:45 p.m., a person was seen approaching on a scooter. When police signaled for the rider to stop, he sped away. As the police gave chase, the suspect opened fire on them. Officers fired in retaliation, hitting the suspect in the right leg. He has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The accused was identified as Sagar alias Maya, a resident of Amar Colony, Neem Chowk. He is a declared 'bad character' of the Amar Colony police station, with 20 cases of robbery, dacoity, attempt to murder, and violations of the Arms Act registered against him. A semi-automatic pistol and two cartridges were recovered from him at the scene.
Police stated that Sagar has a tattoo on his arm that reads, "Maya, the second name for death," and that criminals in his gang have similar tattoos. He also frequently uploaded photos of himself with pistols and knives on social media.
