Assam School Timing Change:  The state of Assam is currently facing heatwave conditions, prompting authorities in Dibrugarh district to adjust school timings to protect students from the extreme weather.

On September 20, the District Elementary Education Office issued an order modifying school schedules for institutions affiliated with AHSEC, SEBA, ICSE, and CBSE. These changes are intended to reduce the impact of the heatwave on students.

According to the order, school hours will now start at 8 am, and assemblies will be held indoors with shorter durations. Schools are also instructed to ensure proper ventilation in classrooms and provide alternative power backups in case of outages. Moreover, students are allowed to wear sandals instead of shoes and may forgo waistcoats or ties for added comfort.

"School hours may start early and end accordingly. Classes may begin from 8 a.m. onwards. School assemblies can be held inside the class and duration can be reduced. Students can be advised not to wear waistcoats or ties and could wear sandals if uncomfortable in shoes. Schools should ensure that all fans are functional and all classrooms are properly ventilated. In case of power cuts, alternate power backups must be arranged," reads the order.

A local school driver mentioned that schools had been closed earlier this year due to unusually high temperatures. "Usually, by this time, with Durga Puja approaching, it’s cooler. But this year, it’s still quite hot,” he said.

These guidelines will remain in effect until further notice as authorities work to mitigate the effects of the heatwave.

In addition to Kamrup (Metro) district, several other districts have also issued new guidelines for school hours in response to the heatwave-like conditions.
