Mumbai Schools Holiday: Due to heavy rainfall, all schools and colleges in Mumbai were declared closed today, September 26, 2024, to ensure the safety of students. Mumbai and the surrounding areas were lashed by intense rain on Wednesday, following which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city and its neighboring districts until Thursday.

The IMD has also extended the red alert to Palghar and Nashik, while Thane, Raigad, and Pune are under an orange alert for Thursday. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution as the severe weather conditions persist.

Data from the city’s civic body’s automatic weather stations revealed that Mumbai received over 200 mm of rain within just five hours on Wednesday evening. Between 5 pm and 10 pm, Powai recorded 234 mm of rainfall, while Mankhurd saw 276 mm. Ghatkopar experienced 259 mm, and Vikhroli received 186 mm of rain during the same timeframe.

Traffic on the roads slowed to a crawl, and local trains were delayed as heavy rain continued to affect Mumbai. Several suburbs, particularly Mulund and its surrounding areas, have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Wednesday afternoon, leading to waterlogging in low-lying regions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and urged them to call the 1916 helpline in case of emergencies.
