NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak: The medical fraternity in India is witnessing a significant legal battle as the Federation of Indian Medical Association (FAIMA) has officially approached the Supreme Court. This move comes in the wake of the cancellation of the NEET UG 2026 examination, which has left over 22 lakhs of medical aspirants in a state of flux. FAIMA’s appeal is centred on what they describe as a "systemic failure" by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in conducting the national-level examination.
Through a series of official communications and tweets, the FAIMA Doctors Association announced their legal challenge against the NTA. They have specifically prayed for the restructuring or total dissolution of the agency to prevent such security breaches in the future. The association’s social media updates highlight their demand for a high-level monitoring committee, chaired by a retired Supreme Court Justice, to oversee the next phase of examinations and ensure absolute transparency for aspiring doctors.

Demands for Structural Reform and Accountability
FAIMA has formally requested the Supreme Court to consider the dissolution or extensive restructuring of the NTA. The association argues that the agency failed to maintain the integrity of the 2026 examination process, leading to the widespread paper leak. They are advocating for a system that is overseen by a retired Supreme Court Justice to restore trust in the national selection process for medical students.
Proposed Shift to Computer-Based Testing (CBT)
A key component of the legal appeal is the demand for a fundamental shift in how the exam is administered. FAIMA has requested the court to mandate a transition from the traditional pen-and-paper mode to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format. This change is intended to minimise human intervention and create a more secure environment for high-stakes testing.
Enhanced Security Protocols and Digital Safeguards
To prevent future leaks, the petition emphasises the implementation of advanced digital safeguards. FAIMA is pushing for the introduction of digital locking systems for question papers, which would only be accessible at the time of the examination. This proactive measure aims to eliminate security risks and provide a transparent, leak-proof selection process that medical aspirants across the country can rely on.
What Is NTA?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) in India was established in November 2017 as an independent, autonomous, and self-sustained premier testing organisation. Approved by the Union Cabinet, it was created under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, to conduct high-stakes entrance exams for higher educational institutions.
Key Facts About NTA Establishment:
Purpose: To conduct efficient, transparent, and international-standard tests (like JEE-Main, NEET-UG, NET, CMAT) to assess candidate competency.
Parent Body: Established under the Ministry of Education (formerly Ministry of Human Resource Development).
Background: The creation aimed to reduce the burden on bodies like CBSE, AICTE, and others, offering a specialized agency for conducting examinations.
Goal: To move toward scientific, technology-driven testing and standardize assessments.
As of May 2026, the NTA remains the primary body for conducting these national-level exams
