Aamir Khan's production, Laapataa Ladies, was India's official entry for the Oscars 2025 but did not make it to the final shortlist. The actor has now addressed the film’s exit and shared his thoughts on the tough competition at the Academy Awards.

In a recent conversation with ABP Live, Aamir Khan reacted to Laapataa Ladies missing out on an Oscar nomination. Speaking at the Ideas of India Summit 2025, he explained that while the film had no shortcomings, the competition in the International Feature Film category was extremely high.

"Kami toh kahin nahi thi. Lekin humein yeh yaad rakhna chahiye ki jab ek film Foreign Language category mein compete karti hai, toh duniya ke jitne desh hai, 80-85 countries had sent their entries, so every country is sending their best film. So that competition is the toughest competition," he said. (There was no shortcoming anywhere. But we must remember that when a film competes in the Foreign Language category, around 80-85 countries send their best films. That makes it the toughest competition.)

Aamir further pointed out that the International Feature Film category is even more competitive than other Oscar categories due to the sheer number of high-quality entries from around the world.

"We have to understand that there are other films which are better than this or at the very least, members ko baaki filmein zyada pasand aayi. Iska matlab yeh nahi ki hamari film achhi nahi. Iska matlab yeh hai ki members ko dusri 15 filmein acchi lagi. Yeh bohot hi subjective field hai. How do you compare? Har aadmi ki ek pasand hoti hai. Toh itna seriously nahi lena chahiye. Main toh bilkul nahi leta," he added. (We have to understand that there are other films that might be better, or the members simply liked other films more. That doesn’t mean our film isn’t good; it just means the members preferred the other 15 films. This is a highly subjective field. Everyone has their own taste, so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I certainly don’t.)

Directed by Kiran Rao and backed by Aamir Khan Productions, Laapataa Ladies is a comedy-drama featuring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. The story revolves around two newlywed brides who are mistakenly exchanged during a train journey to their husbands' homes.

Though the film didn’t perform well at the box office, it gained immense appreciation after its release on Netflix, becoming a fan favourite in 2024. Many viewers and critics praised its storytelling and performances. When Laapataa Ladies was announced as India’s official Oscar submission, it sparked mixed reactions. While many were thrilled, some felt that Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light should have been India’s selection instead.
